Now that there are finally some new homes being built after The Great Recession, and I have started looking at them whenever I can find some models. I have noticed in these new homes that things have changed quite a bit and not just in the decorating but in the floor plans as well. Anyone over the age of 35 probably remembers that every home over 1700 square feet has a family room, living room, formal dining room and of course a kitchen. Well most of the new homes have eliminated the living room and some have also eliminated the formal dining room. Now the living space usually consists of a very open kitchen and family room combination. This is called a great room and near the kitchen there is a spot for a table and chairs and in the kitchen a large bar with 3 or 4 stools. I really love this concept. It allows the people working in the kitchen to be completely involved with the guests that are hanging out in the great room. I hope we never go back to the days of the formal living room. I also the great room concept with a formal dining room if there is enough space in the home for both.
